The Upper Canal begins in the Cottonwood Corporate Center in Cottonwood Heights in front of Old Mill Centre II building. It originally was dug to convey Big Cottonwood Creek water to high bench irrigators. When Salt Lake City built the East Jordan Canal Extension and 6200 South Pump House to exchange Utah Lake water for cleaner creek water, the Upper Canal became a way to move that water to points north. It flows underneath 6200 South near Interstate 215.
